Getreu dem Sprichwort „Home is where your heart is“.

My dear followers, the turn of the year is now indeed behind us and here’s my first post in 2018 of my stay in Andalucia. But first of all a very happy new year to all of you.

Many of you were quite astonished that I have not spent the holidays at home. But where is home? For me home is where I can spend time with my family, or in other words: home is where your heart is. It is not the first time that I spent  Christmas  and the New Year in a foreign country. Everyone who needs to relax I recommend wholeheartedly to fly into the sun or spend the holidays in the mountains.

Almuñécar is a village on the tropical coast of Andalucia nestled between mountains and the sea. The climate is mild with temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees. We had a wonderful view over the Mediterranean sea and the mountains from our airbnb apartment. Salobreña and Nerja were nearby and worth a visit. Moreover the cute village has a botanical garden, a nice long promenade and the old center on a hill with the Castillo San Miguel on top. You can enjoy spectecular sunsets in the sea in Almuñécar. When the sun disappears into the sea the sky looks purplish instead of blue.

Granada, Andalusien

Andalusien Andalusien

Situated at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, Granada has such sights as the famous Moorish Alhambra Palace, indexed as world heritage site by the UNESCO. I recommend to book your entry well in advance online to avoid waiting in the queue. Unfortunately the Alhambra was closed on the First Christmas day when we went there. So we could only see it from outside and the gardens. The city center of Granada is also worth to see especially the Cathedral.

Málaga is one of the oldest spanish towns and has many places of interest as the Alcazaba and the Castillo de Gibralfaro. The way to the castle is rather steep but the effort is worthwhile. From there you have an amazing view. During Christmas time spectacular lighting installations attract a lot of tourists.

Salobreña is a small and pretty village not far away from Almunecar and has also the old part on a hill. The awesome location and the special charme reminded me a bit Santorini. It is an ideal place to spend the summer holidays.

Monachil, Andalusien

Thanks to our good intentions we decided to make a hiking tour on the New Year’s Day. We went by car 1,5 hours to Monachil. Los Cahorros is far away from being a simple hiking path. The trail leads across an overhanging bridge, up a gorge and back through the mountains. Definitely not for those who don’t like climbing. Some rocks are extending into the path and you have to climb along the hooks that are fixed in the rocks. For the trail you must plan about 3 hours but it’s worth the effort.  Following our tour we stepped into a typical Andalucian restaurant : El Puntarrón – absolutely recommendable.
