Vietnam Reise in 2 Wochen

Ho-Chi-Minh-City

Ho-Chi-Minh-City  Ho-Chi-Minh Ho-Chi-Minh-City

We start our journey in Ho-Chi-Minh-City ( formerly Saigon), the largest city of Vietnam. The city offers a number of remarkable colonial buildings such as the Notre-Dame cathedral, the main post office, the opera house and the city hall. Further must-dos are the panoramic view from the top of the financial tower, the visit of the reunification palace and the war museum. All this can be done in one day. My advice is not to spend too much time in Ho-Chi-Minh City as there are far more beautiful places in Vietnam to see.

Mekong Delta

Also schnell nachholen!

I recommend to make a day-trip in the Mekong Delta. The Mekong Delta is a district in the southwest of Vietnam named after the delta formed by the of the river Mekong. There are a multitude of different tour operators. We booked our tour in the hostal we stayed and paid about USD 50 per person including meals.

The bus starts at 7.30 a.m. and the first stop is a local market for fish and veg. Then we continue into the actual Mekong Delta with its countless river arms and canals forming this area. Not only boats but also houses and even markets are floating on the water. The Floating Market is most popular but only active in the early morning hours. On this tour you visit manufacturing sites for rice paper, caramel drops and other things. You may also explore the closer environment by bicycle or chill out in a hammock.

Why not try a little cooking course after an eventful and exciting morning, where you can prepare your own vietnames pancakes. If you haven’t tried one up to his point, you should not miss this event. It’s never too late! Besides vietnamese pancakes you can taste spring rolls for lunch. In the evening there’s the bus back to Ho-Chi-Minh-City.

Mui Ne

Next stop on our journey is Mui Ne, a kite-surfers paradise, five hours away. In a beach front accomodation iHome guests can enjoy the relaxed vibe. Besides the beach, Mui Ne is known for its huge red and white sand dunes. Our sunrise tour was already booked at the hostel in Ho-Chi-Minh-City. However I cannot recommend this tour 100%.

Fairy Stream

Pick-up is at 4.30 a.m. and thus too late to climb up by foot the white sand dunes. The only option offered is to take a Quad that would cost VD 200 round trip. If you do not want to be ripped-off that way, you risk to miss the sunrise. From the white sand dunes we go on to the red dunes. Our tour also includes a short visit to Fishermans’ village/harbour. There you can enjoy fresh fish of the day and you can sit watch the hustle and bustle around. At the end of the excursion there is a stop at the Fairy Stream,  a small river winding through a beautiful landscape picturesquely adorned with rock formations.

Hoi An

Mui Ne by night

Mui Ne by night

From Mui Ne we dare to take the 17 hour ride up to Hoi An with night bus. Apart from the extremely disgusting toilets at the stops, this is a relaxed journey. Having arrived at An Bang Dolphin Homestay, we start the day with a hearty breakfast and the morning on the beach which is far cleaner than the one in Mui Ne. In the evening we visit the beautiful town of Hoi An. Since 1999 the picturesque historic district of Hoi An is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Many strings of colourful lanterns and pretty colonial buildings dominate the streets. The overall picture, however, is somewhat marred by the massive crowds of tourists. Not only the center of Hoi An but also the landscape around is well worth seeing. It is most beautiful and a joy to ride with the bicycle from the beach An Bang to the city or vice versa, crossing rice fields and small villages.

Ba Na Hills

Ba Na Hills

Ba Na Hills

Another highlight is a daytrip to Ba Na Hills. This tour is booked through our homestay. The bus takes us to Ba Na crossing the wonderful Truong-Son mountains. A ride in one of the world’s largest cable cars takes you to the first station from where you can enjoy breathtaking views on the Golden Bridge and the valley. After having visited Golden Bridge and taken a walk through flower gardens and tempels you get back on the car to stop at the second station, 1.138m above sea level. You really feel the temperature difference of 10degrees. After enjoying the worldbest buffet in the restaurant up there you can explore the attractions yourself. Back at the downhill station of the cableway you get on the bus that takes you back to Hoi An.

We make a stopover in Da Nang. From Da Nang we take an inland flight with Vietnam Airlines to Ha Noi. Da Nang has a population of over one million citizens, is one of the largest cities in Vietnam and the best starting point for a visit to the national UNESCO World Heritage Sites Hue, Hoi An and the ruins of My Son. Moreover near to our absolute favourite hostel on this trip, Rom Casa Danang by Christina’s, we have a long beautiful sandy beach.

In case you are in Da Nang on a weekend, do not miss to see the water and dragon show on the Dragon Bridge. Every saturday and sunday at 9 p.m.. However you should not expect too much of this spectacle – the dragon will spit fire three times and after that three times water. Nearby Dragon Bridge is the night market. There’s a lot of knickknacks to see and buy, but it’s worth the experience.

Ninh Binh

Barely arrived in Hanoi we are picked up next day for a day trip to Ninh Binh, 95 km away. Ninh Binh is also named the dry Halong Bay. The landscape is ridged with hard limestone bars, similar to those in the Halong Bay. Our first stop is the temple of the emperors Dinh and Le from the 10th century. Following a small sightseeing tour we cycle through villages of Tam Coc. After this we are served a sumptuouse vietnamese meal. The next part of the tour program is a 1,5 hour Sampan boat trip through awesome caves and the unique landscape of Tam Coc. Final highlight was the viewing platform of Hang Mua. There are 486 steps to be climbed,  which is a really sweaty affair but worth every effort. On one side you have the view to the valley and on the other side wide flat land, rice fields and a pagoda built on a cliff. Exhausted but happy we take the way back. We booked this tour on ” getyourguide” and we were satisfied in every respect. Just the time we spent on the viewing platform could have been a little longer.

Halong Bay

Halong Bucht

Halong Bay

Halong Bay

Halong Bay

Without having taken a breather, the next day we start for our sporty three day trip with Vega Travel to the Halong Bay. Vietnam’s biggest highlight! The Halong Bay is known for its emerald green water and the huge rainforest covered limestone islands. Apart from lots of activities such as kayaking, cycling, hiking and climbing we visited a dripstone cave and a viewing point. In the evening there was a cooking class for spring rolls. One night we slept on the boat and one night on Cat Ba.

It was perfectly organised, the program varied, meals were rich und very good and the staff was very friendly. Especially our guide Lala made the difference. She was very kind and patient, always in a good mood and explained very well. Vega Travel promotes travelling off the beaten tourist tracks and we fully confirm this. Of course you will see somew other boats and tourists, however Vega Travel avoids very touristic and crowded areas and periods of time. The only points of criticism: the boat we slept on is already a bit old and begins to look shabby and on Cat Ba we had only time for a dinner. The next day we had to leave again.

My tip: book at least a 2days trip and stay one night on the boat. On the one hand the evening atmosphere is just fantastic and magic and on the other hand you have the chance to see remote bays such as Lan Ha Bay.

The end.

My conclusion of the journey: The center and north of Vietnam are my favourite when it comes to landscape and culinary highlights. When I recall all the places I have visited, I could have left out Saigon and start directly from Hanoi. Unfortunately we did not have enough time to see the rice terraces of the Muong Hoa valley. Reason enough to travel to this wonderful country again.
