Australiens Ostküste in 3 Wochen

Day 2: Great Barrier Reef

Australien

In Cairns we booked a snorkeling trip with Reef Magic to the Great Barrier Reef – the largest coral reef on earth that is even visible from outer space. However coral bleaching due to climate change and pollution is unfortunately also apparent here.

Day 3: Nandroya Fall

Australien

One of the most beautiful water falls up to me is Nandroya Fall, north west of Mission Beach.

Day 4: South Mission Beach

Australien Australien

We stayed at a beachfront campground in South Mission Beach where we had the chance to see a Cassowary, which is a bird similar to an ostrich with blue and red plumage and living in the rainforest.

Day 5: Wallaman Falls

Near Townsville we did a trip to the Wallaman Falls – the highest falls in Australia. However, after very few rain during the winter season we only saw a lightly dropping  rivulet as a water fall when we went there in November.

From Townsville I took the Ferry to Magnetic Island. It took me about half an hour to get there and as I went there early in the morning and it was still not too hot I did a trail called Forts walk where you can see Koalas in the trees. I met two nice girls from Sweden and Argentine and together we did the trail to the enchanted Balding Bay. All attractive sites on Magnetic Island can be reached either by car, by bus, or an island buggy. We had our lunch break in Horseshoe Bay and afterwards we visited an easily accessible beach in Alma Bay.

Day 7: Airlie Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches on earth, the Whithaven beach on Whitsunday Island can be best reached by boat from Airlie Beach. We booked an Ocean Rafting boat trip which was rather rough and bumpy and not suitable for those getting seasick. An other highlight for me was my first sky dive. There are several spots for sky diving such as Cairns, or Mission Beach where you land on the beach or Airlie Beach. We decided for Airlie Beach as the stunning view on to the Whitsunday islands was just amazing. Highly recommended to all adventure seekers.

Day 10: Cape HillsboroughAustralien Australien

Cape Hillsborough is a place not to be missed when you are travelling Australia’ s east coast. Every morning at 5 a.m. you can see kangaroos on the beach. They are fed by a ranger who is also giving a lot of information. However beware of sandflies.

Day 13: Frazer IslandAustralien Australien Australien Australien Australien

Next stop is Hervey Bay , a suitable starting point to Fraser Island, the apparently biggest sand beach of the world and UNESCO world heritage. Fraser Island is covered with dense rainforest and only accessible by vehicles with four wheel drive or on a guided bus tour. The driver must be well experienced and meet stringuent requirements to get a permit. The highlights are the colored sands, a walk through the rainforest, Eli Creek and the freshwater Lake McKenzie.

Day 14: Noosa HeadsAustralien

On our Way to Brisbane we stopped at Noosa Heads. It’s nice to make a walk along the main beach or stroll through the shops along Hasting Street and relax while enjoying a superbe lunch.

Day 15: Brisbane AustralienAustralien Australien

Nearly all highlights of Brisbane are in the city center. The Centrale Business District DBC,  the City Botanic Gardens, South Bank with many cultural facilities and the Fortitude Valley known for the pulsating nightlife and good restaurants. An other highlight is Mount Coot-tha, rising above the town. On the slopes there is also a botanical garden. Burleigh Heads,  just an hour drive from Brisbane, is one of the famous sandy beaches on Gold Coast.

Day 16: Byron BayAustralienAustralien Australien

My most favorite location was Byron Bay. The lively small town fascinates with a colorful mixture of all kind of people, mostly young, a very relaxed atmosphere,  nice restaurants such as Safaya, sweet boutiques and an amazing nature. If you go there you should not miss to see the Cape Byron lighthouse, the easternmost point of Australia. The view over the beaches and surrounding forests is just breathtaking. If you like surfing this is the place to be. I booked two half-day courses and can just recommend this.

Day 17: Port MacquarieAustralien

On our way south we stopped at Coffs Harbour and Port Macquaire to visit the Koala Hospital. Every day at 3 p.m. visitors can attend feeding. It’s the only hospital in the world taking care of and bringing back to nature injured or ill Koalas. People there do work voluntarily and depend on donations. Mostly Koalas are burnt in bushfires, beaten by dogs or injured with car accidents. Donations are welcome and really necessary: https://www.koalahospital.org.au/!

Day 18:  Blue Mountains AustralienAustralien

My last highlight in Australia before heading back from Sydney are the Blue Mountains. The name Blue Mountain comes from the blue steams which comes from the ethereal oils of the Eucalyptus trees and wrap in the scenery in blue mist. Katoomba which is the main village in this region is the best spot to start a walk along the rim. The three sisters, a very special rock formation that can be best seen from Echo Point Lookout, is a landmark of the Blue Mountains.
