Portugal has long stood high up on my bucket list. Actually we had planned to travel to Portugal already in may, unfortunately Corona made us a dash through the bill! One week prior to our three weeks vacancy in September we dared to book the flights to Porto, only one way, to be able to book the return flights spontaniously in case the Corona situation in Portugal would get worse. Nevertheless we wanted to make the most of our stay and therefore took a rental car. Apart from the requirement to wear a mask in the aircraft, everything went as usual. In fact the plane was very crowded on the way to and back from Portugal.

First stop Porto, Portugal

Arrived in Porto, we went to our small but very fine Guesthouse aDuquesa. The aDuquesa is centrally located, has stylishly furnished and clean rooms and the staff is super friendly. You can start your day with a breakfast that won`t leave anything to be desired. On our first exploration tour we went directly to the city’s highlight, the imposing bridge Ponte de Dom Luis I. The view to the riverside promenade is simply great! On the left bank of the river is the center of the red wine production and on the opposite side you will find the old city with all the historical buildings, portugese restaurants and cafes.

Unfortunately we were not lucky with the weather as the rain was partially very heavy. This was just the right moment for a port wine tasting at Grahams. On a tour you will discover all sorts of interesting information such as the history, production and various types of port wine. At the end the key part of the tour: the tasting in the cellar! We chose three Tawnys of different maturation. This is a more than just recommendable tour in the city of port wine and we paid around fifty Euro for the two of us.

2nd Stop Douro Valley, Portugal

We spent in total three wonderful nights in Porto before picking up our rental car and heading to the Douro valley. You preferably book a car that is not too large as the villages in the Douro valley have narrow winding streets. The Douro valley situated in the North of Portugal is one of the largest vineyards worldwide and a UNESCO world cultural heritage since 2011. The vineyards are extending along the banks of the Douro, the third longest river of the Iberian Peninsula. For the next night we booked a room in the Casa Cimiera which is an old winery of the nineteenth century with country-style rooms, outdoor pool, free breakfast and not to forget the fantastic view over the Douro valley. As this place is quite remote it is better to take full pension. The chef cooks himself very tastefully and abundent, the Portugese kitchen is known for.

You should not miss to see Pinhao with its numerous wineries, the train station decorated with Azulejos tiles and the unforgettable view from the Miradouro de Casal de Loivos. Only a few kilometers away from the Douro is the old Episcopal city of Lamego with its famous pilgrimage church. Those who like to hike will love the Passadicos do Paiva – an impressive wooden walkway along river Paiva near the city of Arouca. One way is about eight kilometers and you can take a taxi for the way back. After having climbed the steep steps at the end of the path we decided for the comfortable and quick taxi.

3rd Stop Coimbra, Portugal

On our further way to the Algarve we had a stop in Coimbra. Portugal’s oldest university and one of Europe’s oldest ones is situated in Coimbra. The round about thirty thousand students characterise to this day the atmosphere of the city. Apart from visiting the very nice buildings of the old city we suggest to stop for some tapas at a cozy little bar in the center. We highly recommend the Taberna Laura offering a large variety of good tapas and meals. We stayed at Hotel Oslo for the night that has a good value for money and a roof top terrace with wonderful view over the city.

4th Stop Sagres

We had an early start the next day as the rainy weather started to bother us. And see what happened, on arrival in our Hotel Mareta Beach in Sagres the sun was shining. So we spent the rest of the day at the hotel’s infinity pool. Sagres is situated on the most western point of the Algarve and it was definitely our favourite. From the culinary perspective the former fisher village has much to offer. There is the Laundry Lounge, the Mum’s and the Armazem we loved very much. Moreover Sagres is a surfer’s paradise. The Praia do Beliche beach can be reached within a ten minutes walk. However after eleven this beach was always very crowded. Therefore we also went in a one hour trip by car to the wide beach Praia do Amado to surf at our own leisure.

5th Stop Lagos

Our second destination in the Algarve was the city of Lagos known for its old city, the city wall, the cliffs and the beaches. From there we made a few trips to very breathtaking beaches. Praia Dona Ana is one of the most beautiful beaches on Ponta Piedade. The sandy bay Praia do Camilo which can be accessed via steep wooden steps looks very picturesque and from the nearby cliffs Ponta da Piedade the panoramic view to the promontory and the lighthouse over there is spectacular.

Trip to Benagil Cave

Nevertheless it was the trip to the Benagil Cave we found most fascinating. You should start your trip as early as possible to arrive there ahead of masses of tourists and enjoy the Cave all alone. Getting up at the very early morning is definitely worth this experience. There are four possibilities to get into the cave: by boat, in a kayak, by SUP or swimming. We decided for the kayak as it was not clear whether the boat would be able to dock because of rough wave conditions and compared to the SUP you can take along your valuables.

However it is important to bear in mind that there are potential risks too with this excitement. It is easy to paddle into the cave but to getting out poses many challenges. There are two access points to the cave, one on each side. Depending on the waves the cave is flushed on both sides by probably high waves. It is therefore essential to wait for the right moment to get out with the kayak. We had ten attempts before we succeeded and I swear we were soaking wet!  Our kayak once got offbalance and I fell into the water in full clothes. Shit happens 😉

This experience however was not able to spoil our day and we were rewarded by one of the most spectacular coastal walks. This walk starts on the Praia de Albandeira and leads to the Praia da Marinha. Each bay more beautiful and magic than the next – an absolute must-see! You should not forget to take enough water, sun protection, hat and sturdy shoes.

Last Stops Peniche, Nazaré & Aveiro

As you now can surely guess, we spent most of our travelling time in the Algarve. There is so much you can see and do and the weather is definitely a go! On our way back we made trips to Peniche, Nazaré and Aveiro. You might ask why we did not stop by in Lisbon and Sintra. Well it was due to Corona, as Lisbon and surroundings were considered risk area at that time and we would have had to quarantine ourselves for two weeks on return to Germany. One more reason to come back soon.

Thus we had more time for other nice places such as Peniche and Nazaré that are absolute surfer spots and well worth a visit. Aveiro is nestled on a lagoon and often called Venice of Portugal because of the characteristic canals and the colorful images of the boats. Only fifteen minutes drive away you can stroll along the beach on a nice wooden walkway of Praia da Costa Nova and stop at one of the nice beach bars.
